blog milestone
Just as I was publishing the lectionary blog entry for this week, I noticed that it's the 200th lectionary blog post. It's fun to see just how much I've written since starting this blog with Advent in 2003 -- and rather inspiring as I seek to file my Ph.D. dissertation this academic year. Heck, if a blog entry here is 1,500 - 2,000 words, a Ph.D. dissertation is pretty much a well-organized and well-documented series of about 50 blog entries, isn't it?
Thanks for reading, and for your encouragement.

Yes; the only way to (sanely) approach a dissertation is to regard it as a series of term papers on related topics. Or, a series of blog entries. Another thing to remember is that there is only one category to evaluate dissertations, and only two (and mutually exclusive)members of that category: finished and unfinished. It will never fully satisfy you--it need only satisfy your committee enough for the degree. Your real work and the definition and the summa of your life are not your dissertation.
I did one, watched and stood by as friends did, now watch students. And now am starting discernment for diaconate. The diaconate is harder.
With prayers for you and thanks for your Lectionary Blog,
Judith

The question is will the committee be as receptive as your blog readers?

Sarah,
Best of luck as you complete your dissertation. I'd like to pass along some advice given to my (now retired) father-in-law as he was working on his dissertation at the Iliff School of Theology and which he passed along to me as I was working on my dissertation. Professor Bernhardt told him to do whatever needed to be done to get the degree and then do what he wanted.
Also, congratulations on your 200th blog posting. It's not just the quantity that matters, of course. My wife and I make it a practice to read your reflections every week as we prepare for Sunday morning, she for preaching and I for leading an adult lectionary class.
May God continue to bless you mightily.
